Riblja Corba were,along with Bijelo Dugme,undoubtely the biggest Rock band of the ex-YU ever.Their music,as the music of BD,is written in golden letters,their songs are sang even today,as a beautiful reminders of a time that is gone away forever.This especially goes for the singer Bora Djordjevic,which,with the beginning of war became a Chetnik (a Serbian ultranationalist),adding his alcohol and drug abuse habits,you can easily guess what a worthless
person he is today.But the songs he wrote 25 years ago are priceless..Another important piece of the YU ROCK HISTORY puzzle..

Again,something different.What we have here is a band from Vodnjan/Pula,a band with a variable number of members,from 8 to 12,playing an interesting and very danceable tex-mex rock.I have seen them in Cakovec 2 years ago,the pic you see is from that show,and of course,they`re my friends too.This is their 6th album (I think..),and I think it is their best.Of course,Gustafi are a band that have albums voted as best album of the year in Croatia,every time they release one.So,if you know how the mexican rock sounds like,try it done by Croatians!

This is the band from Pula,formerly called Dissection,who changed (the reason is pretty obvious) the name into Aeon-which,at the time,an unused name for a band.This recording is a soundboard one,and it is just a glimpse of an Aeon concert,for the moment,just to show you the quality of this band.Enjoy!

PHOENIX (Rom) - Cei ce ne-au dat nume , lp 1973

This is an album I have on vinyl,but I have searched for this one on the net for more than 4 years!Finally,I found it,and here it is for you.Phoenix were (are?) a band from Romania,which played in the early 70`s during the Ceaucescu era,and for me it was a huge surprise to hear them.An energic and virtuose Hard Rock with Jazz and Progressive elements,played by great,and I mean GREAT musicians (especially the bass player Iosif Kappl,the Romanian Jack Bruce!!).Just listen to the explosive Nunta,or try the virtuosity in Negru Voda.For my opinion,truly worth a try!

Wow,this one goes for all the Hellhammer meets Discharge fans!!A band from the USA I haven`t heard anything about,but found this EP on the net (thanx KKTZ).As I said,a Hellhammer kind of Thrash Metal,very Dark and Crusty,with a Discharge influence.I think it is almost a must,right?

SRPSKI TRUBACI (Ser) - 20 Legendarnih Kola - compilation cd 2001

Now,that`s what I call "And now for something completely different"!! You will be wondering too,but I decided to put this compilation on,because it is the best I`ve found representing the great ART and I mean ART of playing the trumpet.The music made by those gypsies (in this case,exclusively only from Serbia) is incredible;sad,euphoric,rhythmic,loud,crazy,perfectly played..I cannot describe it.The story says that it is music to get to war with-which I totally deny and refuse,because music is created to enjoy,not to incite to war-but I put it here ONLY because of it`s beauty.The tracks I recommend are tracks 5,11,14,20 plus all that have something to do with Goran Bregovic (tracks 3,7,10,16),the guy (ex-leader of Bijelo Dugme!!) that popularized this style all around the world with doing the soundtrack for Emir Kusturica`s worldwide known movie Underground.
So if you think I exaggerated with this one,just skip it.If not,get crazy with this one!

I loved TON,you cannot even imagine how I loved them..at this part of their carreer.I lost interest about them with October Rust,but until Bloody Kisses,they were more than an inspiration to me.Here is one of two bootlegs I have from the Bloody Kisses European tour they did in 1994.I saw them and met them in Munich,but this one is approx. a month earlier,in Stockholm,Sweden,at Gino`s.The sound is very good,a soundboard one,so you have a good reason to enjoy it.

The second official release coming from Hope is a full lenght album,the first album of three they did until now.The sound is better than on the first one,even it is a one-take live recording.The structure of the songs progreeded much more,and this release shows that Hope is a talented band,playing a Christian Thrash Metal which is so rare in Croatia.Well,you just wait,and soon I will post their second album,and you`ll see how many steps they passed and how are getting better and better in every new release.God bless.Enjoy this one!!

I stumbled accidentally on this CD (this one is part of a split-CD with the portuguese band Subcaos) wondered what kind of stuff plays a band called Genital Deformities..and remained surprised.This CD is great Hardcore stuff,slightly metalized,but still enough Hardcore.Mid-paced Hardcore sometimes getting faster,but always controlled.Great stuff,really.

GENITAL DEFORMITIES - WHO DID THIS TO MY SISTER , cd 1994

FILM (Cro) - Live u Kulusicu , maxi single 1981

Film were one of the first bands in the New Wave invasion in Yugoslavia in the beginning of the 80s.This maxi single (I wrote maxi single,because the vinyl is at 45 RPM,while for the lenght it can be called as a Mini-LP) was perfect;an energic playing,great selection of songs,the lenght enough to make it exciting and not boring (around 16 minutes in all).And this came out together with the VIS Idoli maxi single I posted earlier,so those two releases are really two exciting vinyls from that period.Jura Stublic (vocal,and the only member that pushed the band forward) today is a brainless clown,but this vinyl is his peak (so bad the peak is on the beginning of the carreer) and pure gold of Croatian/ex-YU Rock discography.I adore this one.

True are an interesting Death Metal band from Samobor,and the first (and only as far as I know) that uses the Tambourine as instrument in their expression!!Anyway,this is great sounding stuff,very interesting structure of the songs too.I am not sure,but I think this is their only studio material they did,but the band still exists (as the matter of fact,I`ll see them the next weekend live in Varazdin),so we can probably expect some more stuff from them.

TRUE - PLASTIC WORLD , CD 2005

ORANGE (Slo) - Madbringer , lp 1983

The biggest Slovenian Heavy Metal band ever,Orange (for this album,on the other albums they are POMARANCA,Orange on slovenian language).Madbringer was the album made for the metalheads outside Yugoslavia and the second band`s album.As far as I remember,the album went good in France,but that was it.It showed again that any Metal band from Yugoslavia can`t do anything bigger outside the country.But,well..this is a very nice one.And it is Heavy Metal.I had the opportunity to see them live in 1983 in Pula`s Arena,promoting this one,and..oh God,it was my first Heavy Metal concert ever!!!I have a souvenir from that show,the whole band`s autographs.

Trivia;There was a funny moment on that concert,at the very beginning of the Pomaranca`s performance,the vocalist came out with a huge axe,raised it,said ; "A Heavy Metal salute:YEAAAAAHHHH!!" and threw the axe to the wooden floor on the stage.Almost in the same moment,practicly the whole stage went out of electricity!!It looked like his axe cut all the cables on stage....

This is a band especially dear to me,the first Croatian Christian Rock band.Glasnici Nade (Messengers Of Hope) is a band of the dominican priest father Anto Bobas (vocal) and his brother Jadranko (he leads the choir in the church of St.Nicholas in Varazdin!).It is a band that doesn`t exist anymore,even I had the opportunity to meet father Bobas last year,it was nice to meet a priest wearing a Kamelot t-shirt!!I received some stuff from the band (not by father Bobas,he gave me a book he wrote,Rock Music And Satanism) from Mika from Hope (thnx bro!) and I will put everything here.This is their first album,and anyway a small part of the Croatian Rock/Metal scene too,so here it is for you.

EDO MAAJKA (BiH/Cro) - Slusaj mater , cd 2002

I know you`re asking yourself now "What the hell is this??"..I already told that I will put here stuff I like,and this album is such thing.I am not,and repeating NOT a fan of Hip-Hop or Rap,but as there is something good in every kind of music,Rap or Hip Hop has his good sides as Public Enemy,partly Eminem,and..ehmm..nothing else..well,here is the Croatian/Bosnian part of that.Edo Maajka is a down-to-earth antirockstar Bosnian guy who`s living in Croatia,and this is his first album.The lyrical part is excellent,Edo is a great songwriter,and all this sounds pretty raw and angry.The music is pretty minimalistic,so it raises this album a level beyond other Hip Hop releases,especially the ones from Croatia.Edo`s live performances are with a live band,so that means that his music gets even harder.For all those who like "strong" Hip Hop....and stop wondering,come on...

This is something you must have if you`re a fan of extreme music.This is a new band from Pula,playing a perfectly executed Death Metal.I myself was surprised by the quality of this band,and I have been to their rehearsal room in November 2006,the little I could see there was absolutely stunning,beside the fact that the guys are great friends and totally cool.I am not an exaggerate lover of the extremest Metal,but those guys really kick some f++king teeths off.I will not exaggerate if I say that they are (for my opinion) the best Death Metal band in Croatia.Period.Try it absolutely!!

MERCENARY COCKROACH - STEPS TO NOWHERE , DEMO 2006

WALTARI (Fin) - So fine , cd 1994

I was a member of their fan-club in 1995!!!I heard one of their tracks on a Roadrunner compilation,and I was hooked by their Variable Metal-I should call it this way-the skillfullness,the perfection of both playing and production..Really..A friend asked me if I ever heard of a Finnish band..you don`t have to ask what happened anymore;he had to sell me his cd.This album was even better than the track I have heard..Mixing virtually every kind of Metal with virtually every kind of music,plus making it as Metal as they can with preserving the originality of the source..I know,I am bullshitting,but if there is justice,then the Red Hot Chili Peppers should kiss asses to Waltari,believe me.On this album you can even find a Death Metal hidden track at the end of Mysterious (after the silence,blah,blah..)..And what to say about the great cover of The Cure and The Stranglers??...I am not their fan anymore,or better to say;I don`t follow their work anymore,they released dozens of albums,but this one remained for me a true beauty.

So,we have Dissection again (for the new people here,Dissection-the Croatian ones-did two demos and then changed the name into AEON.),and this time we go from the very beginning and here is their first demo,an extremely good beginning.Recorded in the EAR Studio,the legendary studio where most of the bands from Pula recorded their demos.).Played very well,they were one of the first serious bands in Croatia playing Death Metal.Unfortunately,they lasted just few years and then split-up.You should have this one,to document a period of Croatian Metal.And,oh yeah,more Dissection/Aeon to come on this blog..Thanx to Rio666.
